Pappy's Pearls of Wisdom

One of the most popular characters of the original Maverick was always heard from, but rarely ever seen: Bret and Bart’s dear old “Pappy,” whose uniquely irreverent philosophy of life was frequently evoked by our two heroes throughout the series.

Roy Huggins, Maverick’s creator, saw Pappy as a means of providing a buffer for some of Bret and Bart's more outrageous attitudes.  "The things that were attributed to Pappy were much more emphatic than Maverick usually was," said Huggins.  "I decided that there were some attitudes that I wanted, that I knew Maverick had -- and I say 'Maverick,' meaning both Bret and Bart -- that I might want to express through a third person.  That was the original reason for Pappy, to say outrageous things that were a part of the Maverick philosophy.  For example, something like 'If either of you comes back with a medal, I'll beat you to death' invited them to act cautiously, or possibly even cowardly."

Here are a few of Pappy’s pearls of wisdom:

"Faint heart never filled a flush."

"Man is the only animal you can skin more than once."

"Hell has no fury  like a man who loses with a four of a kind."

"Love your fellow man, and stay out of his troubles if you can."

"Marriage is the only game of chance I know of
where both people can lose."

"He who plays and runs away lives to run another day."

"Work is fine for killing time, but it's a shaky way to make a living."

"Never play in a rigged game, unless you rig it yourself."

"If you haven't got something nice to say about a man,
it's time to change the subject."

"Never cry over spilled milk... it could've been whiskey."

“’Early to bed and early to rise’
is the curse of the working class.”

"A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once.
A thousand to one... that's a pretty good advantage."

"If the Lord had more respect for money,
he would have given it to a higher class of people."
