One liked junk food, the other ate organic stuff.  One looked like a wreck but had a cool-looking car, the other was trés chic but drove a wreck.  They were two misfits who broke the rules and drove their captain crazy.  But undercover police detectives Dave Starsky (Paul Michael Glaser) and Ken “Hutch” Hutchinson (David Soul) always got results--and Starsky & Hutch became one of the monster hits that made ABC the No. 1 network in the late '70s.

The search for the actor to play Dave Starsky was reportedly one of the biggest TV talent hunts of 1975.  Over 80 actors auditioned for the part (including, interestingly enough, David Soul).  According to director Barry Shear, Paul Michael Glaser got the job with the help of a bag of walnuts.  “It finally narrowed down to three guys,” he said, “and they were going to do this scene for the brass.  I knew Glaser was right, but I also knew the other two were wrong.  The scene called for Starsky to swagger into a bar and dress down the customers.  Just before Glaser went on, I gave him these walnuts and told him to crack ‘em while he talked.  It was a little bit of a cheat, something you couldn’t write into a script, but it played beautifully.”

Much of the success of the show is attributed to the special on-screen chemistry between Soul and Glaser.  That’s not a surprise, considering the actors had been good friends for nearly ten years before they worked together for the first time on the series.  Soul and Glaser grew even closer as a result of their relentless dedication to the show and mutual belief in their characters.
